Journal Club: A Look at Non-RCT

For our first journal club of 2019, we will be joined by our very own Dr. Dan Schauer, Residency Research associate program director. The overall goals are three-fold:

  1. Learn a little about Dr. Schauer’s research

  2. Have exposure to research question development,

  3. Critically appraise an article that is NOT an RCT

Below is the article, “Bariatric Surgery and the Risk of Cancer in a Large Multisite Cohort” we will be using for appraisal. Not only is Dr. Schauer the primary author, but the work from this paper was done at UC and has led to future projects. He did a General Internal Medicine (GIM) outcomes research fellowship here at UC (precursor to IM-STAR) that helped build a research skill for his career. I encourage you to come with questions, article- or career-related, for Dr. Schauer!
