Careers After Residency
Residency is over before you know it. Start getting prepared for the rest of your career with some job finding tips and CV help below.
Job Search Timeline
Start looking for jobs by July of your PGY-3 year (or PGY-4 year for Med-Peds residents).
You should have a goal of signing a contract by February at the latest.
Employers are desperately trying to fill their open positions and as they get closer to July they are more likely to hire someone (leaving fewer job openings for you).
Where to Look
You can have a firm assist you (but know that they probably have motives as they don’t get paid unless you join the practice)
Identify a place/city/organization and contact HR at that location to inquire about jobs.
Use local contacts for Cincinnati (Dr. Eckman for UCMC and Dr. Lenchitz for PCN)
Review academic classifieds online or from journals
Reach out to ex-residents (Dr. Warm can help you identify a few!).
Advice from Attendings
Decide on Community vs Academic Primary Care
Talk to attendings in both positions (your chiefs can help you!)
Think about arranging an IMPP elective.
Interviews
Try to meet staff and physicians in the offices you’re thinking of joining, and not just the ones that the employer arranges for you to meet.
Interview Tips (ACP)
Contracts
Have a lawyer or a firm specializing in physician contracts review your employment agreement.
You should pay attention to the restrictive covenant, jeopardy, probation, partnership, etc.
Salaries
Most primary care practices will offer you a fixed salary for X number of years. It is important for you to understand how your salary will be determined after that time period (collections? RVUs?) and if there are quality incentives or bonuses.

Where to Look
Use your program as a resource, network with hospitalists and program directors who may have contacts at other places
If you’re applying to academic programs, they often have their own websites to apply through. Those jobs are often double posted in other places:

Contract Review:
We recommend having a lawyer review your contract. Some employers will work with your contract negotiations, but even if it is a set contract, it is very helpful to have a lawyer translate so that you understand everything you are signing.
